Before the annual celebration her friends hold in place of her birthday, she uncovers a clue, and another orphan, that might unlock answers about her past. Beatrix and this stranger have more in common than she could have hoped, unlocking an ancient secret magic of a forbidden artifact that binds them.
Doing their best to stay one step ahead of the magic council that seeks their demise and investigating their shared past, the two traverse the vast, whimsical landscape as well as their new, fraught relationship and the meaning of family.
